The additional payments known as transfer add‑ons can quickly become substantial. Manchester United’s 2024‑25 third‑quarter results, disclosed on 6 June, reveal a £138.82 million contingent liability linked to such clauses.

The club explained that these add‑ons are payable only when specific performance criteria are met, such as player appearances, team achievements, new contracts, international caps and bonuses. As of 31 March 2025, £112.25 million of the liability was tied to on‑field performance, £3.19 million to international appearances and £22.03 million to awards, with the remainder classified as “other”.

The concept is illustrated by United’s dealings with Anthony Martial. When the French forward joined from Monaco for £36 million, a clause was attached stipulating that Manchester United would pay an extra amount if Martial won the Ballon d’Or – a condition that has not been fulfilled.

Similarly, speculation that Mason Mount had triggered an add‑on from his £37.5 million move from Chelsea was swiftly refuted by the club. The clause would have been activated had Mount featured in a European final, such as the Europa League defeat to Tottenham, but no such trigger occurred.

While the Martial Ballon d’Or add‑on proved particularly elusive, United have maintained that meeting high‑profile conditions would be worthwhile, given the anticipated benefits to the team’s on‑field results.
