The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon reported that no casualties occurred after small‑arms fire struck a border post.

UNIFIL reported that its position on the Lebanon‑Israel border was struck by small‑arms fire, with no casualties reported.

The incident took place on Wednesday morning, when several rounds of small‑arms fire targeted a UNIFIL outpost near Kfar Shouba along the Blue Line, the UN‑designated border between Lebanon and Israel.

UNIFIL warned that such deliberate attacks seriously endanger the lives of peacekeepers and confirmed it is investigating the incident.

Under pressure from the United States and Israel, the UN Security Council earlier this year set December 31 as the deadline for ending the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.

UNIFIL was created to monitor the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon after the 1978 invasion, and its mandate has been renewed annually ever since.

The mission was expanded after the 2006 Israel‑Hezbollah war, and its supporters say it continues to provide a demilitarised buffer between the two sides along a volatile frontier.

Israel has long accused UNIFIL of failing to prevent Hezbollah’s threats and has recently intensified its push for the mission’s termination amid escalating cross‑border fighting following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel and the ensuing Gaza war.

UNIFIL currently deploys approximately 7,500 peacekeepers from about 50 countries across southern Lebanon.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam recently urged the UN to avert a vacuum that could result from withdrawing the mission from southern Lebanon without a suitable replacement.

Violence has declined since a ceasefire following a June memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, and Lebanon and Israel later reached a US‑sponsored framework agreement.

The Israel‑Lebanon agreement calls for Hezbollah’s disarmament, a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese army into designated pilot zones.
