A United Airlines flight traveling from Newark Liberty International Airport to Spain was forced to return to its origin on Saturday following a potential security incident mid-flight.
The Boeing 767, carrying 190 passengers and 12 crew members, departed for Palma de Mallorca at approximately 6:00 p.m. local time. According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the aircraft successfully landed back at Newark at 9:37 p.m.
Air traffic control communications indicated that security personnel were called to inspect the plane after a passenger reportedly set their Bluetooth device name to a profanity.
Social media reports from a passenger on board suggested that while the crew made multiple requests for everyone to disable their Bluetooth connections, two devices remained active. The decision to divert the flight was made following direct communication with United Airlines’ headquarters in Chicago.
