University of Abuja Law Student Clinches Top Honors at GIABA West African Speech Competition

Amra Onize Salihu, a law student at the University of Abuja, has been crowned the winner of the 9th Inter-Universities Speech Contest. The prestigious event, organized by the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), took place in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

A 500-level student within the Faculty of Law, Salihu represented Nigeria after successfully navigating a national selection process hosted by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).

Competing against participants from Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia, she secured the regional championship, earning a winner’s plaque, a certificate of honor, and a $1,000 cash prize.

Abah Goodness Ojonoma, also a 500-level law student, accompanied the winner as an observer.

The team received specialized guidance from Dr. Nasiru Mukhtar, Director of the Law Clinic, alongside technical coaching provided by Mr. J.R. Gogol of the NFIU.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi expressed immense pride regarding the students’ recent success.

“Our students from the Faculty of Law have once again brought distinction to the university. I extend my congratulations on this significant milestone, and I also commend the Faculty of Law and the Law Clinic for their dedicated mentorship and training efforts,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.

“We remain committed to driving the university’s global visibility through academic excellence and remarkable achievements such as this one,” Prof. Fawehinmi added.
