Indian automotive supplier Uno Minda has approved four capacity expansion and consolidation projects across its component businesses, with total proposed investment of approximately Rs14.15bn ($147.5m). The initiatives cover alloy wheels, aluminium casting, moulding, interior and exterior components, and sealing systems, although details have so far been disclosed for two projects.
The first project is a new greenfield aluminium casting plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, following the exhaustion of expansion space at the company’s existing facility there.
The business supplies components for two-wheelers, cars, trucks and other commercial vehicles, serving both combustion-engine and electric-vehicle platforms.
The Hosur project is expected to require an additional investment of Rs5.10bn and raise annual site capacity from roughly 13,000 metric tonnes to a peak of 30,000 metric tonnes.
Construction will proceed in phases over three years, with production from the first phase scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of FY28, between April 2027 and March 2028.
Uno Minda said existing operations at its Hosur facility would be consolidated and transferred to the new plant by the first quarter of FY29.
Output at the new facility is expected to include structural and general-purpose components, electric-vehicle and powertrain parts, and nearly one million high-pressure die-cast alloy wheels for two-wheelers.
The second project, approved by Uno Minda’s board, adds 3.3 million units of two-wheeler alloy-wheel capacity at Kharkhoda in Haryana. This includes transferring 2 million units of capacity from the company’s existing facility in Supa, Maharashtra.
The Kharkhoda expansion is estimated to require Rs1.55bn in additional capital expenditure and will be implemented over two years, with initial production planned for the fourth quarter of FY28.
Uno Minda said the projects are designed to strengthen its manufacturing network, expand capacity in key divisions and meet growing demand from major original equipment manufacturers. The Kharkhoda facility will also deepen its presence in North India’s two-wheeler alloy-wheel market.
The announcement follows the company’s approval in July of an investment of nearly Rs3.20bn for a new greenfield plant to manufacture passenger-vehicle seating systems in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, marking its entry into the four-wheeler seating market.
