Match scorecard

Northamptonshire produced an exceptional all‑round performance, sealing victory 35 minutes after lunch with a 316‑run win over Lancashire in the County Championship clash at Old Trafford.

Resuming at 24 for 2, Lancashire were bowled out for 129, with debutant Ben Walkden top‑scoring on 22 not out.

Ben Sanderson took 2‑32, finishing with match figures of 6‑71, yet the victory was a collective effort from Northamptonshire’s five‑man bowling attack.

Luke Procter’s side are aiming to regain promotion to Division One for the first time since their 2023 relegation, and there is no questioning their credentials after outplaying Lancashire; the win puts them four points behind second‑placed Kent in a strong Division Two.

Northamptonshire’s bowlers struck first when Liam Guthrie’s inswinger crept past the nightwatchman Tom Bailey’s loose drive.

Bailey’s wicket for 19 was followed in the next over by Josh Bohannon’s dismissal for 10, as the stand‑in captain had his off stump disturbed by a precise delivery from Procter.

Five overs later, Arav Shetty was lbw to Sanderson for 11, leaving Lancashire struggling at 77‑5, before Rocky Flintoff’s pull was caught by Saif Zaib at deep square leg.

Shortly afterwards came one of the season’s strangest dismissals: Joe Moores was given out obstructing the field after he played a Procter delivery into the ground and caught the rebound to stop it from reaching the stumps.

The Northamptonshire fielders appealed, the umpires upheld the decision, and Moores walked for two, leaving Lancashire 82‑7.

Walkden avoided a king pair on his first‑class debut, opening his account with a single off his ninth ball, steering Yuzi Chahal toward mid‑off.

His partnership soon ended when George Balderson was caught at short‑leg by George Bartlett off Calvin Harrison for six.

Lunch was delayed by 15 minutes to see if a finish was possible, but Walkden and Noman Ali carried on until the break.

Ali was subsequently caught at leg slip by Zaib off Guthrie for three, and the match concluded when Mitch Stanley was bowled by Harrison for 10.

The loss ranks as Lancashire’s second‑heaviest defeat by runs against another county, and marks only the fifth occasion they have fallen to Northamptonshire at Old Trafford.

Report by ECB Reporters’ Network supported by Rothesay

Lancashire stand-in captain Josh Bohannon:

“It’s pretty obvious we were out-skilled in probably every facet of the game. Obviously, it’s frustrating, it stings, probably stings for a few days now.”

“It’s incredibly frustrating. It feels like we’re having good chats, it feels like the work that the boys are putting in, in practice with the coaches is really valuable.”

“It feels like we’re making forward strides with that. Just ultimately, for whatever reason, it’s not quite translating out into the middle yet.”

“Everyone knows that confidence comes from winning and performing. That’s pretty obvious. It’s really hard because as a club, we’re trying to develop younger players who we think are incredibly talented and have got a really bright future, not only with us as a club, but just in the game of cricket in general.”

Northamptonshire head coach Darren Lehmann:

“That was a really pleasing performance. We lost the toss, it did a little bit early on and we were in a bit of bother at 100 for five. But I thought George Bartlett played one of the knocks of the year and we got to 280.”

“That was the best we’ve bowled all year, I think. To attack the stumps and to put it in good areas all the time was exceptional from the bowling unit.”

“Everyone contributed: Vasco’s hundred, Saif Zaib’s quick fifty, Procter opening and getting us a start. Everybody doing the team things. I’m really pleased for them all.”

“That was a really good four-day wicket. I think it was one of the better ones I’ve seen at Old Trafford. It had everything you’d want from a four-day wicket.”
