Updates on Karachi Arrests and MQM Political Dynamics
Eleven individuals were detained in Karachi for allegedly participating in rallies supporting MQM founder Altaf Hussain.
The arrest came as police, responding to reports of slogans and flags—particularly those bearing Hussain’s and related identifiers—were seen forming groups on Arif Jiyeja Street. A File of Information was filed under Sections 153-A and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code, citing public disturbances.
Police observed that constable Deedar Ali noted the presence of demonstrators chanting Hussain’s name and carrying flags marked with “jiye Altaf” and “48th foundation day APMSO.” This prompted the police intervention which led to the arrests.
Altaf Hussain established his political presence during his student years at the University of Karachi, founding the All-Pakistan Mohajir Students Organisation (APMSO). His later activities reportedly became central to ongoing tensions in the region.
The FIR included 11 individuals, with authorities stating the slogans were inciting hostility and potential illegal assembly. Police were informed of the situation and officers surrounding the demonstrators during the operation.
The government and MQM have emphasized differing narratives: MQM condemns past actions, alleging the use of force, while Hussain counters claims of political targeting and accuses state and opponents of targeting the party.
Recent months have seen further crackdowns following Hussain’s controversial speech in August 2016, marked by powerful slogans and accusations of fostering resentment. This incident escalated tensions, leading to actions against MQM offices and figures in Karachi.
