US and Iran Exchange Strikes as Regional Tensions Escalate Following Ceasefire Breach

The United States conducted a series of strikes against Iranian targets on Saturday, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM), focusing on military surveillance infrastructure.

“CENTCOM forces launched strikes today in direct response to continued Iranian aggression against commercial shipping,” the command stated.

CENTCOM noted that following previous US operations in response to an attack on the M/V Ever Lovely, Iran was given an opportunity to adhere to a ceasefire agreement. However, the US claims Iran rejected this opportunity by deploying a one-way attack drone that struck the M/T Kiku on Saturday morning.

Iran’s state broadcaster, IRIB, reporting via military sources, indicated that explosions heard near Sirik were the result of projectiles striking a telecommunications tower.

Earlier Saturday, Iran asserted that it had carried out “defensive strikes” against US-linked targets, accusing the United States of violating a memorandum of understanding following US military actions on Friday.

Mohsen Rezaei, military advisor to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, posted on X/Twitter that the US had violated Articles 1 and 5 of the ceasefire agreement, warning that any breach of the Memorandum of Understanding would be met with a “swift and crushing” response.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry further claimed that its recent military actions were triggered by the US attack on Iranian soil and an alleged operation in Lebanon coordinated with the United States.
