The United States and Iran have agreed to a cessation of military hostilities and are scheduled to hold high-level discussions in Qatar this Tuesday. According to senior US officials cited by American media, the move is an urgent attempt to salvage a precarious peace agreement.
This diplomatic breakthrough follows several days of intensifying military exchanges that threatened to dismantle an interim memorandum of understanding signed on June 17. That agreement sought to end a conflict that began in late February, which had severely disrupted shipping in critical waterways.
The terms of the memorandum required Tehran to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington agreed to lift its blockade of Iranian ports.
Temporary Cessation of Hostilities
“We decided to stop all the kinetic activity,” a senior US official told Axios on Sunday, referencing the pause in military strikes.
A second American official indicated that both nations will stand down “for now,” confirming that “vessels can move freely” as diplomatic negotiations resume. Both officials, along with a third knowledgeable source, confirmed that the meeting in Qatar will take place on Tuesday.
CNN also reported similar confirmations from a Trump administration official, validating that the two parties have agreed to meet in Doha for further discussions.
Shift in Venue and Agenda
President Donald Trump has maintained a hardline position throughout the tension. On Saturday, Trump reiterated warnings of comprehensive military action should Iranian attacks on shipping resume, stating that Iran would “no longer exist” if the US were “forced” to restart the war.
Diplomatic sources reveal that the Tuesday meeting was initially slated to take place in Switzerland to address broader concerns, including Iran’s nuclear program. However, following the sharp increase in military confrontations over the weekend, the venue was relocated to Qatar, and the agenda was narrowed to focus specifically on the standoff in the Strait of Hormuz.
