- Show relied heavily on crowd work, audience engagement
ABU DHABI: American comedian Morgan Jay kicked off his Abu Dhabi Comedy Season appearance with a high-octane performance at an arena venue on Sunday night.
The event marked Jay’s first-ever arena gig, headlining a career largely launched through short-form content on TikTok and Instagram. Following a successful Dubai appearance last year, the comedian returned to the UAE with a set centered almost entirely on audience interaction.
Jay opened by weaving through the spectators to perform his signature viral bit, “What’s Your Name?”, utilizing his distinctive autotuned microphone. One standout moment occurred when he pulled a couple onstage and taught them a song; the pair matched his enthusiasm, drawing laughter and vigorous applause.
Transitioning into traditional stand-up, Jay leaned on physical comedy, characterized by animated facial expressions and gestures. He later performed tracks from his comedy album, including the audience-requested “Friendzone,” guiding the crowd through lyrics and cueing them for their parts, occasionally prompting playful “meow” responses.
Despite the local setting, Jay noted he made no significant adjustments to his material to cater to niche UAE sensibilities, though he did sprinkle in occasional Arabic phrases and singled out an audience member resembling him, dubbing him “Habibi Jay.” The evening began with a performance by Emirati comedian Abz Ali.
