WASHINGTON — The top U.S. national intelligence official warned Friday that Iran has “substantially increased” its efforts to target Americans in the Middle East and beyond.
In a memo sent to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton said U.S. intelligence agencies have received information that Iran has substantially increased efforts to target U.S. personnel.
The memo, which was first reported by Axios, said that Iranian lethal plotting efforts against U.S. citizens have reached advanced stages in both the Middle East and certain other countries, according to a U.S. official.
The warning adds to heightened tensions between the United States and Iran.
