A federal law enforcement officer was killed while pursuing a suspect who had skipped his sexual assault trial in Louisiana, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Clarence Frazier Jr., 48, faces charges including murder for the fatal shooting of Deputy U.S. Marshal Drew Hanson during a confrontation. If convicted, Frazier could receive a life sentence or face capital punishment.
Hanson was part of a coordinated federal and local operation to arrest Frazier, who had failed to appear for his trial on a sexual battery charge in Alexandria, Louisiana.
Agents and sheriff’s deputies obtained a search warrant for Frazier’s home and identified themselves upon arrival. After gaining entry, they found Frazier barricaded in his bedroom, where he allegedly opened fire, killing Hanson and injuring him fatally.
Frazier was later arrested following a standoff. He sustained injuries during the incident and was hospitalized for treatment.
U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche’s statement honored Hanson’s sacrifice: “His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his service will forever stand as an inspiration to all who wear the badge.”
Hanson is now listed among over 200 U.S. marshals and deputy marshals who have died in the line of duty since 1794, according to the agency’s official records page.
