Many in Israel believe that US President Donald Trump may reassess the strategic alliance established since Israel’s formation in 1948, which has been critical to its military support.
Currently, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces significant political risks, including potential prosecution over corruption charges and an upcoming general election that could remove him from office later this year.
The challenge for Netanyahu intensifies as Washington pushes for an agreement with Iran that includes Lebanon—a country Israel has targeted since 2023—while the Israeli public remains divided over continuing the conflict.
Following tensions during the June 2025 Iran confrontation, relations have reportedly deteriorated further due to disagreements over Tehran’s path forward.
Iran has emphasized ending Israel’s military operations in southern Lebanon as a condition for a US-Iran peace agreement, creating a rift between the two allies.
In early 2026, leaked conversations (not officially confirmed by the White House) revealed Trump expressing frustration with Netanyahu for refusing to pause Lebanon operations, allegedly calling him reckless and accusing him of ingratitude. Trump was reported to have stated, “You’d be in jail if not for me,” and warned that public opinion had shifted against Israel.
In a May 2026 Axios interview, Trump asserted that Netanyahu “knows who the boss is,” underscoring strained dynamics between the leaders.
JD Vance, speaking at a June media conference, described Trump as the sole world leader sympathetic to Israel and cautioned Israeli officials opposing a US-Iran deal, “Two-thirds of the defense systems protecting your homeland were built and funded by America.”
Fractures in MAGA Support
Recent polling shows growing US public skepticism toward Israel, alongside rising discontent among segments of Trump’s pro-Trump “Make America Great Again” base.
MAGA defectors like former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene have sharply criticized US support for Israel, while media figure Tucker Carlson accused Israel of manipulating Trump to initiate military action against Lebanon under the guise of Iran.
Daniel Byman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies noted Trump’s flexibility in navigating pro-Israel supporters, stating, “The president has a loyal base and can align most Republicans, aided by growing Democratic criticism of Israel.”
Israel relies heavily on US diplomatic and military backing, including a 2016 agreement securing $38 billion in defense aid over a decade. Washington has also shielded Israel at the UN, vetoing resolutions condemning its conduct during the Gaza conflict since October 7, 2023, which has claimed at least 72,000 lives.
Diplomatic Repercussions
Netanyahu’s rivals have cited deteriorating US-Israel relations as evidence of foreign policy mismanagement, though many supported prior conflicts that exacerbated the current crisis.
In June 2026, opposition leader Yair Lapid warned, “Without replacing this government swiftly, Israel’s foreign relations will collapse,” on social media platform X.
Former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, a potential electoral challenger, accused Netanyahu of poor handling that pushed Trump to seek direct Iran negotiations, further isolating Israel from its primary ally.
Political analyst Nimrod Flaschenberg stated, “The US provides Israel with defense, technology, and diplomatic cover—everything.” Meanwhile, former US diplomat Aaron David Miller observed unprecedented public criticism from US officials toward Israel, noting its current unpopularity across party lines.
While tensions persist, experts suggest Trump has not signaled an intent to sever ties entirely. Miller argued that meaningful pressure would require a tangible US-Iran breakthrough, such as resolving Lebanon or Gaza crises, which remain elusive.
