The US women’s national team played a pair of friendly matches in Brazil as part of their preparation for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

In Saturday’s opener in São Paulo, the hosts claimed a 2-1 victory after scoring twice within a three-minute span to overcome the Americans’ early lead.

Sophronia Wilson marked her long-awaited return to the US lineup with a goal in the second minute, having last appeared for the team in 2024 before taking a break to welcome her daughter. Her contribution was a straightforward affair—forcing a turnover before sliding a low drive past the left post from close range.

Brazil’s response was swift. From a defensive lapse on a corner kick, Isabela delivered a cross to the middle where Tainá Maranhão capitalized with a powerful header into the gap between defenders. Just three minutes later, another miscommunication in the US setup allowed Bia Zaneratto to latch onto a breakaway and fire a left-footed strike past the goalkeeper.

Despite being down 2-1 at halftime, US goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn stood firm with three crucial saves to keep the deficit from growing. Claire Hutton nearly pulled level in the 62nd minute with a long-range effort that Brazilian keeper Lele deflected sharply with her right hand.

Lele exited the match in the 81st minute due to a leg injury, having recorded two saves. The US pressed for an equalizer late in the game, with Jaedyn Shaw shooting narrowly wide from point-blank range six minutes into stoppage time following a rebound.

This marks just the second meeting between the two sides, with the US having last visited Brazil for an away fixture in December 2014.
