Oleksandr Usyk has specified his weight class preference for a potential encounter with David Benavidez, signaling a move back to cruiserweight.

As Usyk approaches the twilight of his career, he reflects on an extraordinary journey that includes two undisputed heavyweight championship reigns, secured through decisive victories over Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Daniel Dubois.

Before his heavyweight exploits, Usyk was the undisputed cruiserweight champion, having conquered elite competition such as Mairis Briedis, Murat Gassiev, and Tony Bellew. The cruiserweight division has always been regarded as his most natural home.

Usyk has now reaffirmed his intention to drop down to cruiserweight, as stated during the Canelo Alvarez vs. Christian Mbilli broadcast, with the goal of facing the current unified champion, David Benavidez.

“I cleaned out heavyweight and now I’ll go back to my weight. Now [I weigh] 96/97kg. Today there is change at heavyweight, if I have an opportunity at cruiserweight, I’m back. It’s a big fight because Benavidez is a big champion. When I have an opportunity, I take this opportunity. This is life.”

Benavidez, who previously dominated at super middleweight and light heavyweight, made his cruiserweight debut in May, stopping Gilberto Ramirez in six rounds to capture the WBA and WBO titles.

Nicknamed ‘The Mexican Monster,’ Benavidez is scheduled to face WBC champion Michal Cieslak in December. A victory in that bout could set the stage for a blockbuster clash with Usyk, although a fight against Jai Opetaia remains a viable alternative.
