Utah Man Charged with Attempted Aggravated Murder in Religiously Motivated Attack

Prosecutors in Utah have filed charges of attempted aggravated murder against a man accused of stabbing a Muslim individual multiple times due to his faith.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill confirmed Peter Michael Larsen faces two counts of first-degree felony attempted aggravated murder following the West Valley Mall attack on Monday.

“The charges include a hate crime designation, classification as a habitual violent offender, and allegations of illegal weapon use by a restricted individual,” Gill’s office stated.

“Such violence targeting someone based on religion is deeply concerning,” Gill emphasized.

Police reported the victim sustained widespread stab injuries and required surgical intervention after a friend described 15 stab wounds.

Larsen allegedly told authorities he intended to kill Muslims and posed a public threat due to his extremist ideology and history of violence.

Charging documents reveal Larsen expressed desires to “eliminate Muslims” and stated he targeted the location because of its Muslim population.

He reportedly claimed he would kill additional Muslims if given the chance, according to prosecutors.

Bystanders restrained Larsen before law enforcement arrived, resulting in his detention at a local jail.

Advocacy groups highlight systemic Islamophobia escalating since the 2001 September 11 attacks, referencing recent violence including a 2023 Illinois child stabbing case and a 2026 San Diego mosque shooting where five died.
