Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev gifted exquisitely crafted traditional gazebos to President Donald Trump, destined for exhibition in West Potomac Park. The donation is part of efforts to enhance the planned National Garden of American Heroes. Trucks transporting the handcrafted aywans from Tashkent, Uzbekistan’s capital, were recently observed delivering them to the site.
These gazebos, renowned for their intricate Central Asian woodcarving, reflect Uzbekistan’s cultural heritage. Trump acknowledged the contribution, highlighting its relevance to future public displays in the park. The structures will be unveiled later this fall for visitor appreciation.
The Interior Department’s communications director, Katie Martin, confirmed the donation. She emphasized that the exhibit aligns with broader plans for West Potomac Park, which include statues of American icons, reflecting pools, and dining facilities. Mirziyoyev’s gesture underscores growing bilateral ties between the U.S. and Uzbekistan.
Trump’s West Potomac Park project remains in early stages, requiring review by the National Capital Planning Commission and the Commission of Fine Arts. Officials noted that designs for life-sized statues and other elements are still in development.
The Justice Department clarified last week that the Garden of Heroes is not yet finalized, existing only as a preliminary concept. This means any formal implementation will involve extensive stakeholder input.
Recent bilateral trade discussions have seen Uzbekistan commit to lowering tariffs on U.S. goods, while the U.S. pledged preferential tariff treatment for Uzbek industrial and agricultural products. Negotiations, accelerated in June, aim to expand commercial exchanges.
Earlier this year, Trump praised Mirziyoyev on social media after Uzbekistan secured $8 billion in Boeing aircraft purchases. A reported $32 billion in U.S.-Uzbek trade deals were announced last year, including support for Uzbekistan’s WTO accession.
