Hong Kong parents are advised to vaccinate their children against respiratory infections due to the triple threat posed by influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), according to a medical expert.
Dr. Mike Kwan Yat-wah, an honorary clinical associate professor in the University of Hong Kong’s department of paediatrics and adolescent medicine, emphasized on Saturday that the current summer flu season has yet to reach its peak. This follows the city’s record of its first child death from influenza earlier this week.
“The number [of flu cases] remains high, and there is no sign of decline yet, making it difficult to predict when the peak will occur,” he explained.
He also noted elevated cases of COVID-19 and RSV, warning that Hong Kong is facing a compounded risk from these three viral infections.
“We are now experiencing a triple threat of flu, COVID-19, and RSV — this ‘triple whammy’ is affecting Hong Kong and neighboring regions,” Dr. Kwan stated.
He strongly recommends that parents proceed with vaccinations for their children if they have not yet done so.
