RAWALPINDI – A fire erupted in a van that had plunged into a nullah while navigating a curve on the Islamabad-Murree Expressway near Khajut on Wednesday, according to the National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP). Ten people died and 13 were injured.
The NHMP reported that the Hiace van’s position made the doors inaccessible to the occupants.
Police said the victims were a single family traveling from Multan to Murree.
The deceased and the injured were transported to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad, the statement added, noting that rescue operations began once motorway police and district administration teams arrived at the scene.
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq conveyed profound sorrow and offered his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.
He reiterated his solidarity with the families of those who perished in the accident.
The Speaker prayed for swift recovery of the injured, forgiveness for the deceased, and patience for the bereaved, and instructed relevant authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured.
Earlier this month, a surge of traffic was recorded on the Murree Expressway after vehicles were diverted onto it from the adjacent Murree Road because of ongoing reconstruction work.
