Vancouver Whitecaps stayed atop the Major League Soccer Western Conference after a 0‑0 draw at St. Louis.
St. Louis have been in excellent form, remaining unbeaten since May and now on a league‑record 21‑game streak. For the Whitecaps, a goalless result was a hard‑earned point given their hosts’ dominance.
The draw left Vancouver feeling they had missed a chance to secure the win, as they dominated the first half but were unable to convert their chances. Their resilience was largely due to outstanding defending from the goalkeeper, the centre‑back pairing and a crucial intervention by the captain.
Early in the match, Brian White spurned a promising opportunity. Two minutes in, after a Caps flurry, White attempted to curl the ball around St. Louis keeper Roman Bürki and into the far post, but the shot sailed wide.
White’s second miss came in the second half, around the 50th minute. A precise cross from Ryan Gauld found White, who nudged the ball with his left leg, but it just clipped the left post and stayed out.
Mathias Laborda also missed a header shortly afterwards. He aimed to loop the ball over Bürki, but it struck the top of the net just beyond the crossbar. Had it gone through, Emmanuel Sabbi was positioned to finish.
Vancouver pressed St. Louis strongly in the opening 20 minutes, creating several chances, yet they failed to convert. In a conference where City are performing well, the missed opportunities felt costly.
Despite the pressure, Vancouver held firm. Their defensive organisation remained among the league’s best, and Yohei Takaoka was only called upon for a save in the 63rd minute, producing a key stop and maintaining the clean sheet.
St. Louis nearly seized the win late in the match, but a timely tackle by Gauld blocked Tomas Totland’s effort. The final whistle ended the game as a 0‑0 draw, though Vancouver felt they deserved the victory had they capitalised on their chances.
The point keeps the Whitecaps one ahead of St. Louis (52‑51). However, the race for the conference lead remains tight, with Dallas on 50 points, San Jose on 47 and Houston on 46.
The pressure is high, but Vancouver’s upcoming fixtures—including a visit to bottom‑half Austin—offer a relatively easy path to extend their lead.
Despite recent inconsistent performances, the standings still position the Whitecaps as the top team in the Western Conference.
