India’s batting hopes took a blow ahead of the second T20I against Afghanistan, as spinner Varun Chakravarthy was ruled out of the remaining matches in the series.
Chakravarthy had only just returned from a hamstring injury and made an immediate impact in the series opener, claiming 1/16 in four overs to help India secure a seven-wicket victory.
BCCI Confirms Varun Chakravarthy Injury
The BCCI provided details on the setback, confirming that Chakravarthy experienced discomfort during his third over of the opening T20I.
“Varun Chakaravarthy experienced sudden-onset discomfort in his left lateral abdominal region while bowling his third over in the first T20I. Scans have revealed a side strain, and he has subsequently been ruled out of the remaining two T20Is,” the BCCI said in an official release.
The injury is particularly frustrating for Chakravarthy, who had recently completed an extensive rehabilitation process after suffering a hamstring issue during India’s tour of England. He had spent close to two months at the BCCI Centre of Excellence before being given the all-clear to return to action.
Ravi Bishnoi Called Up as Replacement
India made one change to their playing XI for the second T20I in Delhi, bringing in Ravi Bishnoi in place of Chakravarthy.
Bishnoi offers India an alternative leg-spin option, while Axar Patel and Washington Sundar provide further spin choices. With Chakravarthy’s availability for the Asian Games also reportedly in doubt, his latest injury will draw close scrutiny from the Indian team management.
