A vehicle plowed into a youth soccer match in Wichita, Kansas, killing a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man while sending ten others to hospitals with traumatic injuries, according to police statements released Saturday.
Injuries spanned from minor to serious, though none of the surviving victims are believed to be in critical condition, Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses stated during a press briefing. He confirmed both fatalities were declared dead at the scene.
Captain Moses identified the driver as a 34-year-old woman whose vehicle came to rest in a field at the western edge of the Stryker Sports Complex. While she is cooperating with investigators, Moses declined to confirm an arrest, stating only that she remains in police custody.
“We understand what occurred, but we are still working diligently to determine why it happened, and we have not reached that point yet,” said Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan.
Among the injured were two five-year-olds, two eight-year-olds, a nine-year-old, and five adults, police reported. Beyond those ten trauma patients, an eleventh adult was admitted for non-traumatic medical concerns.
According to Moses, the driver has a child who was participating in soccer at the complex, though not on the field at the time of the crash. Two juveniles were also riding in the vehicle, he added.
Emergency dispatchers began receiving calls regarding the incident at 3:25 p.m. local time, Moses noted.
“Today is a heartbreaking day for Wichita,” said Mayor Lily Wu. “Families gathered at Stryker Sports Complex for a Saturday afternoon of youth soccer, never anticipating the tragedy that would follow.”
