Multiple Venezuelan states were affected by twin earthquakes, with La Guaira emerging as a symbol of hope after three young siblings were rescued from the rubble, their rescue broadcast on state television.
In the footage, a man is heard telling the first child, “Come here, my child, come here,” before asking if they were siblings. The girl confirmed there were three of them, before the third sister was pulled out sobbing and covered in dust from head to toe.
Tributes have been paid to the deceased, including the wife of Venezuelan footballer Héctor Bello, who died saving their daughter during the quakes. Bello honored his wife on Instagram, writing: “I’ll tell her the story of how you saved her, my love – how you gave your own life for our daughter, how you were a brave woman who never abandoned her, even as you took your last breaths.”
The deaths include one Portuguese national and two Brazilian citizens, while four Spanish nationals were confirmed among the fatalities with 106 still unaccounted for, according to Spanish media citing their foreign ministry.
Venezuela’s Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed multiple states were affected, with Caracas hardest hit in the neighborhoods of Los Palos Grandes and Altamira. The government reported that aftershocks primarily impacted the northern coastline, including La Guaira, Aragua, Carabobo, and Falcón.
