Jesus initially doubted he could rescue his father, but then heard Jose shouting from the rubble: “Don’t leave me here.”

“I told him, ‘Trust me: Stay calm. Keep the kids calm over there. I’m not leaving without you,'” Jesus recalled.

Jose had been trapped for over an hour with his two younger sons, who suffered minor injuries. The debris remained unstable and posed additional dangers.

“My first thought was my children. I had the little one right here,” Jose said, gesturing to his chest. “The other was nearby but buried. I couldn’t see his face—only his foot and hand.”

Despite the danger, Jose shielded his children while a firefighter friend called out for survivors and provided rescue equipment.

Jesus spent the night waiting for daylight and a jackhammer to clear the debris. The following morning, a police specialist squad arrived with the necessary equipment.

With assistance from Jesus’s firefighting team in La Guaira, they rescued Jose and his sons at approximately 3:30 p.m. on June 25, over 20 hours after the earthquakes.

Jesus embraced Diego and Santiago, kissing them and telling them, “I love you, brother,” before stepping away and weeping.

Jose described the experience as life-changing, expressing enduring gratitude: “I am grateful for the rest of my life that I was given this opportunity—not just me, but my two young children.”
