Protesters in Venice are organizing actions to protest the billionaire US ambassador’s planned visit aboard his 117-meter superyacht, fearing it will disrupt local traditions and prioritize elite interests over community needs.
“We disrupted Jeff Bezos’s wedding last year – this year, let’s challenge the ambassador’s arrival,” stated Stella Faye, a 28-year-old activist and researcher, during a gathering of around 40 demonstrators on Thursday.
The demonstrations reference last year’s protests against Bezos’s lavish wedding, which activists tied to broader concerns about wealthy individuals influencing Venice’s cultural and urban landscape.
Activists worry the ambassador will dock centrally during the Festa del Redentore festival, a historic celebration marking Venice’s resilience after a plague outbreak. This event traditionally unites locals through processions and fireworks along waterfronts.
“Redentore remains a community-owned occasion,” Faye emphasized, noting heightened tensions due to the ambassador’s rumored presence.
