The Dutch Grand Prix was red-flagged after just one lap following a massive accident for home favorite Max Verstappen.
On a damp circuit at the end of the opening lap, Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull after clipping the white line on the inside of Zandvoort’s final corner — the high-speed, banked Luyendyk turn leading onto the main straight. The car speared head-on into the outside barrier before rebounding across the track and coming to rest on the inside. Verstappen quickly reported he was unhurt and apologized to his team for the early exit.
Verstappen avoided being collected by following traffic, with Pierre Gasly taking evasive action in the Alpine. Moments earlier, Nico Hülkenberg had also narrowly escaped a serious incident when his Audi teammate Gabriel Bortoleto spun directly in front of him.
Under the red flag, drivers assembled in the pit lane awaiting the restart, navigating debris scattered before pit entry. Teams are permitted to change tires during the stoppage. The restart is scheduled for 15:33 local time.
At the time of the crash, Verstappen was running seventh after a disappointing qualifying session. Polesitter Lando Norris maintained his lead through a chaotic start, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli passed George Russell for second. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc gained two positions to hold fourth ahead of Oscar Piastri’s McLaren and teammate Lewis Hamilton.
The incident brings an unfortunate end to Verstappen’s six-year tenure at his home race, where he won the first three editions of the revived Dutch Grand Prix in 2021, 2022, and 2023. The event will depart the calendar after organizers opted not to pursue a contract renewal with Formula 1 management. Earlier in the week, the four-time world champion confirmed a contract extension with Red Bull through the end of the 2030 season.
