Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s eagerly anticipated return to international cricket has not unfolded as hoped. The 36-year-old pacer, who was recalled following nearly four years of absence from the T20I format, has found himself in a difficult spot against New Zealand. The comeback series has proven to be an uphill battle for the seasoned bowler.
Kumar last represented India in a T20I back in November 2022. His recall materialized following standout displays for Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the IPL. He contributed significantly to RCB’s consecutive title victories, with remarkable bowling spells of 17 wickets in 2025 accumulating to 28 wickets in the 2026 season. His consistent run rate and elite swing proved sufficient to secure him his place once again. Yet, translating domestic success into international form has proven an uphill task.
In his first substantive match at the ICC Cricket Ground in Christchurch on October 22, Kumar allowed 49 runs to creep through four overs without dismissing a single batterer. Two days later, against the Kiwi opposition in Christchurch, he conceded another 50 runs while managing only one wicket. His woes continued in Wellington on October 27, where he leaked another 40 deliveries without taking a wicket, and his latest outing yielded yet another spell of chaos as he conceded 41 runs across four overs.
Across four appearances against New Zealand, Kumar yielded 180 runs in just 16 overs, managing only a single wicket. At 11.25 runs per over, he continues to highlight the depth of his struggles. The primary concern lies in his failure to contain aggressive batsmen once they settle. While his experience and ability to swing remain valuable assets, he has struggled to regain the tight control and consistency that once made him one of India’s most reliable white-ball specialists.
Looking ahead, the veteran paceman faces stiff competition within the Indian pace attack, with Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav, and Prince Yadav all vying for places. Whether he is called upon for the next international series remains to be seen. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that he may need to secure exceptional results in domestic cricket once more before he can secure his place back on the T20I squad.
