Experienced catchers seldom dominate July headlines, yet their significance surfaces when championship‑contending teams require reliable backup options behind the plate. This was precisely the scenario confronting the Kansas City Royals after star catcher Salvador Pérez sustained an injury, prompting the club to seek veteran depth at the position. For fans of the Toronto Blue Jays, the Royals’ need has reignited a familiar narrative involving a well‑known player.
After stints with six organizations over more than a decade — including a three‑year period with the Blue Jays — Luke Maile has earned a promotion to the Royals’ active roster.
The Royals announced that they have selected the contract of catcher Luke Maile, as reported by Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors. In corresponding moves, outfielder John Rave was optioned to Triple‑A Omaha, and the club created a 40‑man roster spot by designating right‑hander Eric Cerantola for assignment.
The promotion provides Maile with another opportunity to contribute at the major‑league level after beginning the season in Triple‑A. Throughout his career, teams have consistently valued his ability to manage pitching staffs.
Maile will add depth behind the plate for the Royals while Salvador Pérez recovers from a sore elbow, according to NBC Sports. The 35‑year‑old backstop has yet to appear in a major‑league game this season and has posted a .202/.324/.303 slash line with two home runs and nine RBI in 105 Triple‑A plate appearances.
Although his offensive production has been modest, Maile’s defensive reputation and familiarity with veteran pitching staffs have helped extend his major‑league career.

Toronto Blue Jays Veteran Continues Lengthy MLB Journey
Maile’s latest promotion marks another chapter in one of baseball’s longest‑running journeyman careers. Following his debut with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015 and three seasons with the Blue Jays, he has subsequently played for several other clubs.
Between 2017 and 2019, Maile appeared in over 150 games for the Blue Jays, hitting .193/.257/.293 with a .989 fielding percentage.
Maile, now 35, is a journeyman depth catcher, McDonald noted. Over his career he has suited up for the Rays, Blue Jays, Brewers, Guardians, Reds and Royals, appearing in 465 games and compiling a .209/.277/.320 slash line over 1,304 plate appearances.
For Kansas City, the move provides insurance while Pérez works through his elbow issue. For Maile, it offers another opportunity to contribute on a major‑league roster after years of serving as one of baseball’s most dependable veteran backup catchers.
