The Philadelphia Phillies have devoted recent seasons to constructing one of the deepest pitching staffs in the National League.
Although the spotlight has largely focused on stars such as Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez and Jhoan Duran, the organization has also routinely integrated numerous relievers and depth arms to sustain reliable bullpen performance.
Among those arms was Yunior Marte, who served as a primary middle reliever for the Phillies over two seasons. Despite inconsistent results, he stayed recognizable to fans during the team’s recent playoff appearances.
Now, after stints with several organizations following his departure from Philadelphia, Marte has secured a new opportunity with his in‑state rival, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Marte signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier this month and was initially placed with the team’s Florida Complex League squad before being promoted to the Triple‑A affiliate Indianapolis Indians, as documented in the official transaction log.
The signing provides Marte another opportunity to revive his major‑league career after a challenging period that included a short tenure with the Cincinnati Reds earlier this year, which ended with his release.
According to CBS Sports, Marte cleared waivers after being removed from the Reds’ 40‑man roster and has chosen to test free agency instead of accepting an outright assignment. He allowed four runs while recording a single out in his only appearance for Cincinnati this season.
That disappointing performance was costly, yet the Pirates evidently recognized sufficient upside in Marte’s arm to give him another opportunity.
For Pittsburgh, the acquisition is a low‑risk addition of a veteran pitcher with major‑league experience who can supply organizational depth and may compete for a bullpen spot later in the season.
Marte’s most recent move adds another chapter to a career that has already traversed several organizations and even included overseas play.
Anthony Franco reported for MLB Trade Rumors that Marte has returned to affiliated baseball after a 2025 season in Japan, noting that he pitched in the major leagues each year from 2022 through 2024, made 39 appearances for the San Francisco Giants as a rookie, and spent the subsequent two seasons as an inconsistent middle reliever with the Phillies.
In those two years with Philadelphia, Marte occasionally displayed the power stuff that made him an intriguing bullpen option, but command issues and inconsistency prevented him from securing a permanent role.
The Pirates will now evaluate whether they can help the veteran right‑hander rediscover the form that once made him a valuable contributor in a contending Phillies bullpen.
