Veteran Yankees Infielder Bids Farewell, Reflects on World Series as Ultimate Highlight

After eight seasons in the majors, a brief stint with the New York Yankees provided the veteran infielder with the defining moment of his career.

Earlier this month, Jon Berti announced his retirement from professional baseball via social media, concluding a career spanning more than fifteen years.

“After much reflection, I have decided to retire from professional baseball,” Berti posted on Instagram. “It has been an incredible journey filled with highs and lows. I am deeply grateful for all the opportunities and lessons that baseball has provided me over the past fifteen-plus years.”

One of the most memorable chapters of his career occurred during a single season in the Bronx. Despite missing time due to injuries, he joined a Yankees squad that reached the 2024 World Series, providing the versatile infielder with a fitting capstone to his career.

Acquired from the Miami Marlins just before the 2024 season, Berti brought a multi-positional skill set that had proven valuable throughout his career.

His defensive adaptability quickly proved useful, though his time with the Yankees was cut short by a left calf strain.

“That versatility and consistent production led the Yankees to trade for Berti right before the 2024 opener, as recalled by Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors. He compiled a solid .273/.342/.318 batting line when in the lineup, appearing in just 25 games over 74 plate appearances.”

In limited Yankees service, Berti recorded one home run, six RBIs, and five stolen bases. His ability to fill various defensive roles also led to a unique postseason moment.

During the American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals, Berti made his first career start at first base, a notable example of the defensive flexibility that defined his value as a major leaguer.

The Yankees ultimately non-tendered Berti in November of that year, after which he signed with the Chicago Cubs to conclude his playing days.

Despite his brief tenure in New York, Berti achieved something many players never experience: featuring on baseball’s biggest stage with the Yankees.

When asked about the defining memory of his career, Berti pointed directly to that experience.

“Coolest memory would be, probably, being part of a World Series team, right?” Berti said during a recent appearance on Foul Territory. “Being a Yankee, going to a World Series.”

This sentiment serves as an appropriate conclusion to a career defined by versatility and persistence rather than individual accolades. Berti debuted with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018 and eventually became a reliable utility player with the Marlins before his unexpected opportunity in New York.

His Yankees chapter lasted only one season, and injuries prevented him from making a significant statistical impact. However, the opportunity still delivered the memory he ultimately valued most.
