VfL Wolfsburg and Christian Eriksen Agree to Mutual Contract Termination

The 34-year-old midfielder is recovering from a cardiac-related incident during a June friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine.

VfL Wolfsburg and Danish international Christian Eriksen have mutually agreed to terminate the midfielder’s contract, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Wednesday.

The decision concludes Eriksen’s agreement, which was originally set to extend through June 2027.

The former Premier League playmaker suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s 2021 European Championship opener against Finland in Copenhagen, requiring a pacemaker implantation. After a six-month recovery period, he continued his career with the medical device in place.

In July, Eriksen announced his intention to relocate to Denmark for personal rehabilitation purposes. He stated, “Prioritizing time near my family in Denmark is crucial for me now. I’m grateful we reached a mutually beneficial resolution.”

“My tenure at Wolfsburg included both triumphs and challenges. I have full confidence in the club’s leadership and believe VfL’s future success is secure,” Eriksen added.

During his 12-month stint at Volksparkstadion, Eriksen made 34 appearances across all competitions, contributing three goals and 10 assists.

Managing Director Dieter Hecking affirmed the club’s support for Eriksen’s decision, noting, “Christian has achieved remarkable milestones throughout his distinguished career. His impact on teammates, staff, and supporters during his time here will remain memorable.”

Previously, Eriksen played for Ajax Amsterdam, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, and Manchester United, establishing himself as one of football’s most versatile midfielders.
