Shortly after telling Spurs fans he intended to stay, Victor Wembanyama agreed to a multiyear extension with San Antonio, a deal ESPN reported at five years and $252 million.
Valued at $50.4 million annually, the agreement represents the NBA’s maximum rookie‑scale extension and includes a player option for the fifth year.
“Spurs family, I’m here to stay,” Wembanyama tweeted on Friday, adding, “Whatever it takes.”
Although the Spurs have not disclosed the financial terms, they released photos and video of Wembanyama signing the contract.
Wembanyama has long been regarded as one of the league’s premier young talents, a status evident even before the Spurs chose him with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Standing 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 m) with an 8‑foot (2.44 m) wingspan, he has averaged 23.4 points, 11 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 blocks per game over his first three NBA seasons.
Having earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and a first‑time All‑NBA First Team selection, Wembanyama placed third in MVP voting after posting career‑high averages of 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
He shoots 34.2 percent from three‑point range for his career, averaging 2.2 made triples per game, and has topped the league in blocks each season since joining the NBA.
The Spurs were defeated by the New York Knicks in five games last month during Wembanyama’s inaugural NBA Finals appearance.
His supporting cast now comprises guards De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell and Dylan Harper, with the addition of veteran forward Tobias Harris signed by San Antonio.
