The contract structure includes a $6.95 million signing bonus, $1.3 million base salary for 2026, and $235,294 per-game active roster bonus ($4 million total if played all games). Incentives are tied to team success: $1 million for playoff berth, $1.5 million for divisional win, $2 million for NFC Championship, or $4 million for Super Bowl victory.
If the Vikings reach the Super Bowl, Smith would earn the full $16.25 million payout. The per-game roster bonuses reduce his guaranteed money to $8.25 million, with potential to reach $12.25 million with full participation.
“Smith is a glue guy,” an executive explained, noting his impact extends beyond statistics. “His mere presence makes the defense better and elevates the entire team.”
Smith’s marketavailability late in the process stemmed from his stated intention not to attend training camp, making Minnesota’s return inevitable if he chose to play another season.
With a defense already capable of competing at the highest level, the Vikings’ success now hinges on offensive consistency. If the offense delivers, Minnesota could snap its recent playoff drought and extend Smith’s legacy in purple.
