Villa ignite thrilling 3-2 Champions League opener

Aston Villa responded to concerns over their attacking output with an emphatic 3-2 victory over Club Brugge in their Champions League opener.

The newly crowned Europa League winners had failed to score during their first three Premier League fixtures and managed only one shot on target. That drought ended in Belgium as John McGinn, Emiliano Buendia and Nicolas Jackson put Villa in control.

Villa produced 14 attempts in a stimulating first half. McGinn opened the scoring with a trademark first-time side-footed finish into the bottom-left corner, exploiting Pau Torres’ powerful run from defence.

Club Brugge’s open approach made for a fast-paced contest and Hugo Vetlesen equalised with a low finish into the opposite corner. Buendia restored Villa’s advantage three minutes later, tapping home after good work from Joao Gomes.

The hosts threatened on the counter-attack and Jackson secured the decisive goal when he chased down Torres’ long ball, reaching it before goalkeeper Yann Sommer and finishing into an empty net. It was the striker’s first goal since completing a club-record £65m move.

Club Brugge were back within one goal just after the hour mark through Nicolo Tresoldi’s penalty, awarded for Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s handball following a pitchside review. Villa then endured sustained pressure but protected their lead to claim all three points.
