Vinicius Jr. Rescues Brazil in Hard-Fought Opening Draw Against Morocco

A moment of individual brilliance from Vinicius Jr. saved a point for Brazil in a challenging tournament opener against a disciplined Moroccan side.

Vinicius Junior secured a vital equalizer for Brazil in a 1-1 draw against Morocco, as the five-time champions endured a shaky start to their 2026 World Cup campaign in New Jersey.

Morocco took the lead in the 21st minute of the Group C encounter when Ismael Saibari capitalized on a clever pass from Brahim Diaz, racing past Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhaes before clinicaly chipping the ball over Alisson Becker.

Brazil are pursuing a record sixth world title, 24 years since their last triumph in 2002. The presence of legends Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, and Kaka in the stands at New York New Jersey Stadium served as a reminder of that glory, but the current performance suggests Carlo Ancelotti has significant work to do.

In a historic move, Ancelotti became the first foreign manager to lead the Selecao at a World Cup. Despite a disappointing fifth-place finish in South American qualifying, the Italian manager remains confident that his squad can compete with any team in the expanded 48-team format.

The goal sparked a brief surge of energy for a lackluster Brazil, with Lucas Paqueta nearly doubling the lead with an acrobatic effort that was saved by Bounou before the interval.

The second half saw Brazil press for a winner, with Igor Thiago, Raphinha, and Danilo all testing Bounou, though the Moroccan goalkeeper remained resolute. Morocco nearly secured a late victory when Alisson Becker was forced into a sharp double save to deny efforts from El Aynaoui and Chemsdine Talbi.
