Trade unions have expressed deep concern that the government’s proposed austerity package will disproportionately impact workers, pensioners, and low-income households. They strongly oppose potential changes to wage indexation, value-added tax (VAT), and other measures that could diminish purchasing power, arguing that wealthier segments of society should bear a greater share of the fiscal burden.
The protest also drew significant participation from students, who marched to oppose education budget cuts, rising tuition fees, and reforms they fear will render higher education less accessible and affordable.
The demonstration initially proceeded peacefully, with crowds carrying placards, playing music, and dancing through the capital’s streets. However, violence broke out later near the Brussels-Midi railway station, where a faction of protesters began throwing objects and fireworks at law enforcement officers.
In response, police deployed water cannons and tear gas, though some demonstrators retaliated by hurling gas canisters back at the officers. Additional police units equipped with tear gas launchers were deployed to the scene, supported by aerial surveillance from a helicopter.
Further unrest was reported in the vicinity of the Brussels-Central station. Authorities clarified that these violent clashes occurred on the sidelines of the event and were separate from the main, peaceful trade-union march.
Initial reports indicated that 21 individuals, including 13 minors, were detained. However, by Friday evening, the total number of detentions rose to over 100, comprising approximately 30 judicial arrests and 80 administrative detentions. While clashes, fires, and property damage were reported, official casualty figures have not yet been confirmed. Police confirmed that the primary trade-union march itself remained peaceful throughout the afternoon.
