At 37, Virat Kohli, whose two‑decade career has produced many illustrious moments, is pushing himself to become a new version of his greatness. On Sunday he reached the impressive milestone of 15,000 ODI runs and completed his 55th century – the third‑fastest in the format – while dominating the West Indies bowling attack.

Kohli told the host broadcaster after scoring an unbeaten 139 off 88, “I got a challenge at this stage of my career to kind of up the ante and play a gear to higher end. That was exciting for me to work on. It excites you when you have to unlock a new version at this stage of your career, which will eventually help anything that you play for, be it playing for India or in the IPL. It’s really helped me a lot to play with a free mind and I think that’s what’s working for me.”

Kohli began the innings with a six off his first five balls, a top edge, and continued to hit boundaries, finishing the day with nine sixes – a new personal best. He complemented this feat with ten fours, including three consecutive fours in the 29th over, as he chased a 296‑run target and crossed the 15,000‑run landmark. He becomes only the second batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to reach this milestone.

Kohli reflected on his approach to milestones: “My focus has never really been on these milestones, so to say. It’s just about understanding the situation and doing the job for the team. Achievements come along, and I feel very grateful and blessed to be in this position after playing for so long. I keep my head down, work hard, and thank God for everything I’ve been blessed with.”

Kohli’s approach to 50‑over cricket has evolved. Once focused on risk mitigation and building long innings, he now balances that discipline with an aggressive intent to maximise runs once he feels settled. Ahead of the current series he expressed ambition to clinch the winning runs in the 2027 World Cup final. This season he has amassed 523 runs, placing him third among top scorers in 2026, and his strike rate of 116.74 ranks him among the elite, surpassed by only three players in the top 50.

“I promised myself I’m going to play positively because I can”

Kohli elaborated on his positive approach: “I promised myself I’m going to play positively because I can,” he said. “So I’m going to continue to play like that, but not be reckless. There is a fine line, which as a professional, as an experienced player, I should have the ability to execute in this way without playing reckless shots and get the team through.”

Kohli attributes his ability to play with a free mind to his physical conditioning. “I think to follow a free mind, you need a fit body. So for me, it works the other way around. I stay physically fit and then I’m able to visualise the game in the way I want to play, which allows me the best chance to go out there and execute in the way that I did tonight.”

The psychological side of the game is paramount for Kohli. “The game’s more or less in the mind. I’ve never been one to practice a lot, even when I was playing all the formats. So it’s just about staying mentally fresh, staying in the present moment and expressing myself out there to play in a certain way. Getting used to this template more often helps me perform at my best.”

Kohli credits his motivation to remembering his roots. “The only thing we need to do is just look back one step, where we came from. That’s something we tend to forget when we’re caught up in the hustle of the world, the attention, fame and love from fans. It can be easy to forget where you came from. But just looking back at the journey from childhood makes you feel grateful.”

He also shared his heartfelt appreciation for representing India: “I enjoy each and every minute that I’m out there playing for India because I understand that it could have been a possibility that I wouldn’t be standing here. I wouldn’t have played for India at all. That could have been my reality as well. But I’m getting to live all these amazing moments, representing my country, playing in front of big crowds and doing the job for the team. As a cricket player, this is all that I dreamt of and I’m getting it. I have nothing but gratitude in my heart. I just want to put my head down, keep working hard, put a smile on my face and hopefully make other people smile too.”
