Virat Kohli delivered another brilliant ODI chase on Sunday, smashing an unbeaten century against the West Indies in the opening ODI at Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, steering India to a commanding win.

Chasing 296, India lost Rohit Sharma for 32, but that only ushered Kohli to the crease. The seasoned batsman partnered with captain Shubman Gill, and together they seized full control of the pursuit.

Gill notched a century of his own before falling for 110, yet Kohli kept the pressure on. He reached his hundred in emphatic style and stayed unbeaten as India wrapped up the chase with eight wickets remaining and 50 balls to spare. Kohli finished with 139 not out from 88 balls, striking at a rate of 157.95, featuring 12 fours and seven sixes.

The innings was especially notable because Kohli entered the match just 59 runs shy of 15,000 ODI runs. He surpassed that milestone during his knock, becoming only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to achieve the feat.

Kohli Matches Sachin’s List‑A Century Record

Kohli’s century also levelled him with another Tendulkar benchmark. Prior to the match, he had 59 List‑A centuries, one shy of Tendulkar’s 60. His unbeaten hundred against the West Indies pushed his tally to 60, tying Sachin at the summit of the list.

What makes this achievement even more striking is the number of innings it took. Tendulkar needed 538 innings to reach 60 List‑A centuries, whereas Kohli accomplished the feat in far fewer innings.

Kohli Ties Sachin’s Home‑Ground Century Record

The century also brought Kohli level with another Tendulkar record. His hundred raised his international centuries on home soil to 42, matching Sachin Tendulkar’s tally. Before the game, Kohli stood at 41 home centuries, while Tendulkar held the record with 42.

Thanks to Kohli’s masterclass and Gill’s century, India chased down the target of 296 with 50 balls to spare, sealing an eight‑wicket victory.
