Vivek Ramaswamy, the Republican candidate for Ohio governor, confirmed Thursday that his campaign has ceased airing an advertisement that targeted the childhood trauma of his Democratic opponent, Amy Acton’s mother. The ad sparked widespread outrage for its focus on the estranged parent’s history of domestic abuse, including the rape of Acton by her stepfather when she was between 10 and 12 years old.
The controversy intensified after court records revealed Donna Arthur, Acton’s mother, had previously accused her daughter of lying about their family’s living conditions during her stepfather’s trial. Critics condemned the ad for exploiting a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Ramaswamy’s campaign initially defended the advertisement, with Donald Trump publicly backing it during a rally, though the candidate refused to acknowledge the relevance of the abuse allegations to Arthur’s credibility.
“It ran to completion and we put up four other ads,” Ramaswamy told reporters in Vandalia, adding a call for the campaign to prioritize policy over “30-second ads.” The ad was later edited from its original 60-second version after removing claims that Arthur had misrepresented her family’s circumstances during her daughter’s trial. Court documents confirmed the family had indeed lived in a tent during the investigation into the rape charges.
The $4 million ad buy faced criticism from both parties, with reports highlighting Arthur’s struggles with mental health and her living situation in recent years, including residing in her car with numerous cats. These details raised concerns among ad producers about the appropriateness of the messaging. Acton’s campaign retaliatory ad condemned Ramaswamy for “exploiting the sexual abuse of a child” and accused the governor race of descending into “desperation.”
On Thursday, Acton addressed the controversy directly, stating, “My brother and I experienced a lot of things, a lot of abuse and a lot of neglect. We were frequent flyers in children’s services, ended up living in a tent in the middle of winter.” She accused Ramaswamy of intentionally weaponizing her family’s trauma to salvage his “struggling campaign.”
