The White House announced on Friday that the United States and China will establish a dedicated communication channel for artificial intelligence incidents. Following a summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping, the two nations agreed to create the “U.S.-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue” to discuss the risks and benefits of AI, adopting the terminology “SI” instead of “AI.” The White House noted that the next dialogue exchange is scheduled for November.
Additionally, the two countries agreed to set up a bilateral communication channel specifically for AI incidents. Prior to the summit, President Trump stated that while Super Intelligence would be a significant topic of discussion, he preferred to leave the issue as it currently stands, noting that this aligns with China’s position.
President Xi Jinping struck a more cautious tone, urging the United States and China to manage their global rivalry and maintain human oversight over artificial intelligence. “We have both the capability and the responsibility to develop and manage AI for good, ensuring that its development remains consistently under human control,” Xi stated during his address at the White House on Thursday.
