President Donald Trump is set to gather at the National Mall in Washington DC this Saturday for a “spectacular rally” commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The celebration comes as a severe heatwave affects much of the eastern and central U.S. The festivities are scheduled to feature an ambitious fireworks display—intended to be the largest in history—alongside flyovers involving hundreds of aircraft.
Organizers announced that military flyovers will occur every hour from 13:15 local time (17:15 GMT) until sunset, with the new Air Force One expected to participate in one of the formations over the capital.
The event has not been without controversy. Opponents have accused the president of politicizing the national anniversary, and several musical performers withdrew from the lineup shortly after their initial announcement.
Extreme weather conditions, with temperatures reaching approximately 38C (100F) and high humidity, combined with a delayed start time, may potentially reduce attendee numbers.
The heat has already forced several cancellations. On Friday, the National Park Service cancelled its annual Independence Day Parade in Washington DC due to safety concerns. Similar cancellations have been reported across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and as far west as Colorado.
Additionally, the White House-backed public-private partnership managing the events warned that evening thunderstorms could cause further disruptions.
On the eve of the holiday, President Trump delivered a speech at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, asserting that American identity is being threatened by domestic “radicals” and “extremists.”
During his address, the president warned against a resurgence of “the communist menace” and criticized “newcomers” who hold ideologies he claims are opposed to the American way of life.
These remarks highlight an intensifying political strategy leading up to the November mid-term elections, as Republicans increasingly attempt to characterize Democratic opponents as communists.
The official event, titled “Salute to America 250 Celebrations & Fireworks,” is scheduled to begin at 19:00 local time, with President Trump expected to deliver his address around 21:45.
Despite the oppressive heat, the president has vowed to deliver a “really long speech” to demonstrate his endurance and resolve.
