Washington Summit Secures $30 Billion Tariff Reduction and Establishes AI Dialogue for US, China

The United States and China have reached an eight-point consensus following discussions between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump, according to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Under this agreement, the two nations will implement a $30 billion reciprocal tariff-reduction plan and initiate formal dialogue on artificial intelligence.

Both governments acknowledged the efforts of their respective economic teams and endorsed several measures, including the creation of a bilateral trade council, the aforementioned tariff-reduction arrangement, and the continuation of outcomes from previous negotiations held in Kuala Lumpur.

Previously, the two countries agreed to extend a trade truce by two months beyond its November 10 expiration date, providing additional time to negotiate a more comprehensive trade agreement, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Wednesday.

The leaders of the world’s two largest economies concluded a three-day summit that emphasized personal diplomacy over sweeping public announcements. Chinese state media Xinhua reported on Saturday that President Xi has since returned to Beijing.

Regarding artificial intelligence, both sides agreed to establish a dedicated dialogue to evaluate the technology’s risks and benefits, with the next session scheduled for November. They also committed to setting up a communication channel to address AI-related incidents.

Additionally, the two nations agreed to mutually support each other as hosts for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ meeting and the Group of Twenty summit, with both leaders signaling their intent to attend the events hosted by their counterpart.

In the realm of foreign policy, the leaders agreed that Iran must honor its commitment to refrain from developing nuclear weapons and that no country or entity should impose transit tolls on international waterways. They also emphasized the historical precedent of China and the United States fighting as allies during World War II.
