Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, a courageous Cuban artist and leader of the San Isidro Movement, has arrived in the United States following years of unjust imprisonment by the illegitimate Cuban regime. Otero Alcántara’s only “crime” was refusing to remain silent, instead using his art to demand the fundamental freedoms that everyday Cubans have been denied for nearly seven decades.
The San Isidro Movement, which he helped establish, served as a beacon of hope for a generation of Cubans who refuse to live under tyranny. The regime’s fear of citizens speaking the truth about life under communism and constant repression was evidenced by its decision to imprison Otero Alcántara. For daring to envision a free Cuba, he was repeatedly harassed, detained, and imprisoned; today, he lives in exile.
The Trump Administration remains committed to supporting the Cuban people’s pursuit of freedom from tyranny and stands in support of democracy, prosperity, and fundamental freedoms. We call for the immediate release of the more than 700 political prisoners unjustly detained by the regime. The international community must stop ignoring the human rights abuses of the Cuban regime and join us in demanding an end to such repression.
