Victor Wembanyama’s 33-point performance led the San Antonio Spurs to a 103-82 thrashing of the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4 of the NBA Western Conference Finals, evening the series at 2-2.
The 22-year-old French center shot 11-of-22 from the floor, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, while adding eight rebounds, five assists, three blocked shots, and two steals in 31 minutes. His contributions helped the Spurs establish a strong defensive effort, forcing 17 turnovers and making 11 steals.
“We just did what we needed to do,” Wembanyama said of the team’s response to their deficit. “It was nothing amazing. It wasn’t magic. We just did what we needed to do.”
The Spurs stretched their lead as large as 25 points, outscoring the Thunder in multiple quarters. Their victory was all the more impressive given Oklahoma City’s earlier dominance on the road in this year’s playoffs.
Despite the loss, Thunder forward Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the team with 19 points, showcasing his skills alongside an NBA-best 64 wins this season for Oklahoma City. However, the Spurs’ Mitch Johnson credited Wembanyama’s aggressiveness in keeping San Antonio from falling into a 3-1 series hole.
Johnson praised Wembanyama, “Our competitive response all year has been pretty good, and he has been at the forefront of that. Tonight he felt an obligation to set a tone for us in a variety of ways. The aggressiveness was a reflection of that. … I think he wants that responsibility. He’s built for it.”
The Spurs will head to Oklahoma City for Game 5 on Tuesday, looking to secure a crucial win in the best-of-seven series. For now, Wembanyama and the team are focused on the task at hand: winning six more games before claiming the NBA title.
Wembanyama reflected on his own performance, “I’m not going to get into details, but in general, being more disciplined and just trusting the game plan even more,” he said. The Spurs’ defensive effort, led by Wembanyama, forced the Thunder to commit multiple turnovers.
