Legendary former West Indies all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers, regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time, has died aged 89.
Sobels played 93 Test matches between 1954 and 1974, scoring 8,032 runs and taking 235 wickets.
A fluent left‑handed batter, he posted an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958, a Test record that stood for 36 years.
He was also a brilliantly adaptable bowler, delivering both spin and pace.
Sobers also represented Nottinghamshire in English county cricket and was knighted for his services to the sport in 1975.
He was subsequently honoured as one of Wisden’s five cricketers of the 20th century.
During the 1968 season with Nottinghamshire, he became the first player to clear all six balls of an over for six in first‑class cricket.
“A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers,” Cricket West Indies said.
Nottinghamshire described him as “cricket’s greatest‑ever all‑rounder and an iconic figure in Nottinghamshire history”. “We are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers,” the club added.
England also honoured him on social media, calling Sobers “one of the greatest to ever play the game”. They concluded, “Forever in our hearts, Sir Garfield Sobers.”
Sobers made his first‑class debut for Barbados at the age of 16 and earned his West Indies cap two years later at 17.
Initially more successful as a bowler, he bowled left‑arm wrist and finger spin as well as pace, before establishing himself as a prolific batsman with 26 Test centuries and a career average of 57.78.
Across his first‑class career he amassed 28,314 runs, including 7,041 for Nottinghamshire, and was celebrated as a superb fielder.
Although his leadership was not as celebrated as his playing career, he served as West Indies captain from 1965 to 1972 and also led a Rest of the World XI on its 1970 tour of England.
