West Zone Coach Amit Dani Urges BCCI to Reconsider Duleep Trophy Knockout Format

West Zone was eliminated from the Duleep Trophy 2026 following a 52-run defeat to North Zone in the quarterfinal at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru between August 23 and 26. The setback has led West Zone head coach Amit Dani to voice concerns regarding the tournament structure and advocate for modifications in how the competition unfolds in upcoming seasons.

Dani, a former first-class cricketer from Mumbai, has proposed to the BCCI that the domestic tournament reevaluate its knockout system. In his view, the current setup imposes undue pressure on teams too early in the season, especially when players are yet to regain full match fitness post the off-season hiatus.

“I recommended to the BCCI that they seriously consider avoiding knockout matches until the final in the Duleep Trophy. As the opening tournament of the season, players are usually somewhat unpracticed. Had North Zone exited after a single game, it would have been equally unjust to them,” Dani told The Times of India.

Rationale Behind Dani’s Proposal

The initiative comes amid concerns over player growth and exposure during the competition. Dani pointed out that the existing format hinders selectors’ ability to observe emerging talents across several games—an essential process for shortlisting candidates for advanced levels of competition. There remains space within the tournament calendar for additional league fixtures prior to the final scheduled for September 6.

“Selectors were interested in evaluating Tanush Kotian, but he featured in only one game. Batting conditions proved challenging with grip and turn favoring bowlers. More matches would benefit players like him. Considering the final is set for Sept 6, an extra league match could be accommodated,” Dani added.

Notable Performances Despite Defeat

Even after being ousted in the quarters, Dani commended several individual efforts put forth by West Zone players throughout the campaign. Musheer Khan, scoring 96 in the fourth innings, showcased resolute technique against demanding bowling attacks. Ruturaj Gaikwad, run out at 66 during the final chase, demonstrated commendable application at the crease before departing.

“It was a top-notch innings under pressure. The conditions made batting particularly tough, yet Musheer exhibited excellent temperament and execution,” Dani remarked.

Reflecting on the broader impact of the tournament, Dani identified three players whose consistent efforts deserve recognition moving forward—namely Musheer Khan, Tanush Kotian, and Tushar Deshpande—each showcasing qualities that align well with higher representation standards.

“From our side, Musheer, Tanush and Tushar Deshpande delivered standout performances. Tushar bowled with tremendous fire and pace. I’d encourage considering all three for India A or the Rest of India squad ahead of the Irani Cup,” Dani stated.
