The White House is reportedly evaluating a proposal to acquire the Chagos Islands directly from Mauritius, according to a Sunday report by The Telegraph.
The plan, drafted by U.S. officials, would circumvent the United Kingdom to secure American control over Diego Garcia, the strategically vital military installation in the Indian Ocean. Reuters was unable to immediately verify the report, and neither the White House nor the UK Foreign Office responded promptly to requests for comment.
This option is one of several alternatives being prepared for the administration. The initiative aims to counter British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s move to cede sovereignty of the archipelago to Mauritius. The White House has reportedly maintained regular discussions with Downing Street regarding the future of the Diego Garcia base.
Britain paused its agreement to transfer sovereignty of the islands in April. That deal, which would have preserved the joint U.S.-UK facility at Diego Garcia, has drawn criticism from President Trump.
