Donald Trump has been experiencing lower leg swelling and mild bruising on his hands, but the U.S. president’s physician has confirmed that he remains in excellent health.
According to a memo by Dr. Sean Barbabella, published by the White House, Trump “maintains excellent health, with strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological and overall physical function.”
The memo, dated Tuesday and released late on Friday, affirms that the president is “fully fit to carry out all duties” of the office.
Trump’s visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Tuesday—his third in 13 months and fourth during his second presidency—was closely monitored after earlier reports of swollen ankles, bruised hands and a blotchy neck.
Trump, the oldest person ever elected to the White House, will turn 80 on 14 June. Former President Joe Biden, aged 82, faced questions about his cognitive function after leaving the Oval Office before Trump’s second term.
Barbabella’s memo noted minor lower‑leg swelling that has improved since last year and described the hand bruising as “common, benign and consistent with minor soft‑tissue irritation related to frequent handshaking, especially when aspirin is used for cardiovascular prevention.”
The memo did not comment on a skin treatment on the president’s neck in March, nor did it mention a subsequent MRI scan the president undertook in October.
Cardiac function was described as normal, and a comprehensive neurological examination confirmed a normal mental status, including screenings for depression and anxiety. The memo lists Trump’s height at 6 ft 3 in (190 cm) and weight at 238 lb (108 kg).
Preventive counseling was also provided, covering diet, low‑dose aspirin usage, increased physical activity and continued weight loss.
