GENEVA: The World Health Organization announced on Saturday that the cause of pneumonia that resulted in the death of a Russian laboratory worker at an anti-plague research facility in Siberia remains undetermined, with no confirmed cases of plague identified.
The WHO reported that Russian health authorities conducted tests on the deceased lab worker and individuals who had close contact with her, finding negative results for high-concern pathogens. According to officials, all contacts continue to show no symptoms, and no additional linked cases of severe pneumonia have emerged.
“Based on available information, the WHO has found no evidence of ongoing transmission related to this incident,” the organization stated. “A primary uncertainty remains the absence of a confirmed diagnosis in the deceased laboratory worker.”
The lab worker became ill and died under undisclosed circumstances on October 2, leading authorities to place approximately 200 people in quarantine and raising public health concerns across social media platforms.
Health officials worldwide have maintained heightened vigilance regarding fatal pneumonia cases of unknown origin since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, which originated from a cluster of respiratory illnesses in China. In many instances, the specific cause of such pneumonia cases cannot be identified.
Russian officials have confirmed that the lab worker had received proper vaccinations and that tests revealed no pathogen-related microorganisms connected to her work in her system.
Russia completed health evaluations for all of the worker’s contacts earlier in the week and stated that it had shared all necessary information with the WHO following standard protocols.
