In 1998, Wilco and Billy Bragg teamed up to release Mermaid Avenue, an album of previously unheard lyrics by folk legend Woody Guthrie, curated by his daughter Nora. A second volume arrived a few years later, followed by a third in 2012 as part of the Complete Sessions box set. The project also featured guest musician Natalie Merchant. Last night, at Wilco’s Solid Sound festival held at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts, the trio performed the full Mermaid Avenue album live for the first time. While Wilco and Bragg have played individual songs from the series before, they had never toured the complete volumes. The set featured selections from all three volumes, played out of order.
